Michigan's Best Coffee Shop: Top 10 list, plus Best of the Rest - cherokeerally.com

It's hard to define because for some of us, it's all about pricing, for others it's about convenience and for others it's about the experience: you know, the "hipster" coffee shops where a barista heats the water to a perfect degrees, then takes minutes to "pour over" that water onto freshly ground coffee from exotic-sounding regions in countries such as Colombia, Ethiopia or Ecuador.

All of this, and we're not even considering lattes, cappuccinos, frappes or sandwiches and pastries. I visited 22 coffee shops from Feb. As with all of our Michigan's Best searches, I visited each place with our local crews, and we took notes and photos, interviewed the owners and managers, talked to customers and sampled the coffee and specialty drinks.

Our goal: To find quality coffee, fun and creative specialty drinks and a welcoming atmosphere. Along the way, we recognized local businesses that are working hard to serve their loyal customers. I encourage you to use this list when you're traveling the state. Thanks to everyone who made this a great experience.

The coffee bag labels are painted by Bain, an artist who recently released a children's book. Combine the funky, eclectic vibe with great coffee, lattes and even a Vegan hot cocoa, and you have the winner of Michigan's Best Coffee Shop. It's also a funky place created by John Roos, who thinks outside the cup. He goes beyond the traditional coffee shop, creating an atmosphere among his employees and customers centered on quality coffee. It comes in from all over the world, and he roasts it in a back shop where he's also putting together orders, making silkscreen art for coffee bags and embracing a "let's give it a try" philosophy.
